ORI Attends BWIAB Along With Keynote Speaker Jennifer Ackerman

May 2024

The ORI was a proud sponsor and attended The Biggest Week in Birding in Oregon, Ohio in May. We met lots of bird enthusiasts and got to hear Jennifer Ackerman speak on her New York Times Best selling book “What an Owl Knows”. Thank you to Leica for being a co-sponsor and donating some amazing binoculars that we used to gawk at a screech owl on the Magee Boardwalk tour.

The BWIAB had over 2,200 participants, had 62 total programs and speakers, 198 field trips and 232 species of birds observed. There was unique music concert set to bird imagery and a delicious banquet.

Next year the BWIAB is scheduled for May 9-18th and ORI's Denver Holt is scheduled and looking forward to being a keynote speaker there.

He will be doing a talk on Snowy Owls & Lemmings: 35 Years of Predator-Prey Dynamics in the Arctic, where he will share insights from 35 years of dedicated snowy owl research in Utqiaġvik / Barrow, Alaska. He will be highlighting the intricate relationship between snowy owls and their primary prey, the lemming, and exploring the alarming declines both species have faced at that location over the recent decades. Holt will discuss the critical role of predator-prey dynamics in Arctic ecosystems, the potential causes of these population shifts, and why understanding these changes is essential for conservation efforts. This presentation offers a rare glimpse into the nuances of Arctic wildlife and the ongoing challenges they face.
